Organic Browntop Millet is an ancient grain valued for its nutritional value and easy digestibility. This grain contains:

  • Gluten-free - suitable for gluten-sensitive individuals.

  • Rich in fibre - helps maintain healthy digestion.

  • Rich in minerals - such as iron, magnesium and calcium.

  • Plant proteins - important for muscle function and energy.

Ayurvedic approach:

  • Vata dosha: Brown sorghum has warming properties and therefore helps to balance the Vata dosha, especially in the cold season.

  • Pitta dosha: Due to its mild flavour and easy digestibility, this grain is also suitable for balancing Pitta dosha.

  • Kapha dosha: It is recommended to be used in moderation as the grains may promote mucus accumulation.

Methods of consumption:

  • Porridge: Cook like rice and serve with vegetables or spices.

  • Baked goods: Grind into flour and use in gluten-free baked goods.

  • Desserts: Use in sweet dishes, for example with coconut milk and dried fruit.

Millet, like oats, comes from the meadow grass family in the East Indies. It is one of the oldest cultivated crops and has been cultivated in Europe since before Christian times. Almost 5 000 years ago, the Chinese Emperor included millet in the list of the five sacred food plants, which is why its importance was so immense. The guests of Attila, the last and most powerful Hun king, one of the most powerful barbarian rulers ever to attack the Roman Empire, were treated exclusively to sorghum dishes. And the Greek philosopher Pythagoras recommended that sorghum be used to improve health.

Until 100 years ago, millet played an important role in the diet, but later fell into oblivion as many things changed with the rise of the potato and the large-scale cultivation of maize. Today, we are returning to the values of millet, as it is one of the most mineral-rich products that nature has to offer.

Brown millet is gluten-free, i.e. it is a gluten-free protein containing gliadin and glutenin. They contain fluorine, sulphur, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and others. It is also particularly rich in B vitamins such as B1, B2, B6, B17, pantothenic acid and nicotinamide. With 59 mg of silica, 6,8 mg of iron, 0,6 mg of fluoride, 3 mg of sodium and 170 mg of magnesium per 100 g, brown millet is a good source of these important minerals. It is noteworthy that the minerals, trace elements and active substances here are in a good form that can be easily absorbed by our bodies and our cells.

Tip: whole-grain brown millet
Because the husk of golden millet is hard, it is not edible and must be peeled. But the original golden millet, which is the original millet we call brown millet, does not need to be peeled. According to medieval medicine, brown millet has been highly praised and has become the basis of a healthy and high-quality diet again today.

Most of the minerals and trace elements are contained in the surface and outer layers of the grain, which are usually peeled during processing. Since brown millet is processed in its entirety, with a special grinder designed for this purpose, including the husk of the grain, all the nutritional value of brown millet groats is fully preserved.

Brown millet flour is much more nutritious than millet flakes, as the latter have to be hot steamed and stabilised. You can add brown sorghum flour to dry breakfast cereals as well as to any liquid such as freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, soups or yoghurt. As a small snack, as a supplement to breakfast or snacks, two teaspoons of brown sorghum flour can be mixed with a grated apple. In its uncooked form, the nutrients are more easily absorbed by the body than in its heated or cooked form: brown sorghum flour is best consumed raw.
