Traditionally, they are used with a cup of warm milk or water, which are commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine as a medium or environment (anupama) to prepare, use, channel and better absorb the health effects of herbs or supplements. Other media that enhance the medicinal function of the herb (vehicle) include honey, cane or green syrup, clarified butter (ghee), or oil.
